How To Strengthen Our Relationship with God

By: Genesis Garcia, Editor: Karen Luna

Building and maintaining a relationship with God should be the foundation of our faith. As Pentecostal Christians, our spiritual walk is more than just following rules or attending church services. Walking in this path is about knowing God personally and having an intimate relationship with Him that we are able to follow anything He asks of us, without hesitation. But, how can we follow what is required of us and seek God more intimately?

As I was meditating and reflecting on this, I wrote down a few ways we can get to know God and deepen our walk with Him:

  1. Spending time daily with God gets us closer to Him

Building and maintaining a strong relationship with God begins with intention. It should be our intention daily to spend time in His presence and seek His face so we can know what He asks or wants of us. Obviously this can be easier said than done with how busy our schedules can be with work, school, or extra curriculars but that is the beauty in seeking Him daily. God wants our commitment/dedication in separating time and slowing down to prioritize Him.

James 4:8 says “Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.” - NLT

This verse highlights and actually tells us that God responds to our search for more of His presence. Whether it be through prayer, worship, or simply crying before Him, we are inviting His presence into our lives. Although it may be hard with a busy schedule, even small moments with God can lead to spiritual growth and a deep relationship with Him.

  1. Reading and applying God’s word

Through Scripture, we learn God’s character, His promises, and His will for our lives. Reading the Word helps us recognize God’s voice and align our thoughts with His truth.

Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”- NLT‬‬

God’s word gives direction, especially when we feel lost. As believers, we are called not only to read Scripture but to apply it. When we obey what God reveals through His word, we grow spiritually and begin to reflect Christ in our daily actions.

  1. Praying honestly

Prayer is how we communicate with God. We do not have to limit ourselves to praying in a “formal” or “fancy” way or only when we are in church. Prayer is meant to be constant and sincere. God desires honest conversation and through our prayer we can develop trust and dependence on Him.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT) says “Never stop praying.”

This verse encourages a prayerful lifestyle. Continually praying shows that God is involved in every aspect of our lives. Our relationship with God grows stronger when we constantly share our concerns, choices, and thankfulness with Him. Our faith is strengthened, and our emotions are brought into harmony with His by prayer.

  1. Being led by the Holy Spirit

We should all understand how important the Holy Spirit is to our day-to-day existence. The Holy Spirit leads, convicts, consoles, and gives us the ability to live in accordance with God's desire. Sensitivity and submission to the guidance of the Spirit is necessary for a solid relationship with God.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) says “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”

Giving up our own desires and letting God guide us is what it means to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Even though it is uncomfortable, this frequently requires us to self-reflect, pray, and be obedient. We develop spiritually and more clearly represent Christ in our lives when we heed the advice of the Spirit.

  1. Growing through fellowship and community

God never meant for us to navigate this path by ourselves. Spiritual development, responsibility, and encouragement are all provided by friendship with other believers. Church is a community where we are strengthened together, it is not just a location we go to.

Hebrews 10:24 (NLT) says “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.”

By coming together in fellowship, we gain the ability to uplift each other and develop our faith together. Participating in service, worship, and learning with fellow believers helps us stay rooted and connected. Being part of a community strengthens our relationship with God by reminding us that we belong to His body.

Growing a connection with God is an ongoing journey throughout life. It demands dedication, obedience, and a genuine spirit. God longs for closeness with His people and encourages us to pursue Him with all our hearts.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT) says “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”

God faithfully reveals Himself and changes our life when we dedicate ourselves to seeking Him every day. As youth and as an organization, let us keep growing, searching, and staying near to Him so we can be ready for whatever comes our way. If we maintain this relationship with God, we will be stronger together and able to overcome hardships that arise in our lives. God bless you all.
